The Best Sprouting Kits For Mason Jars In 2024 (Highest Quality)
This best sprouting kits list includes single jar kits, multiple jar kits, 32 fl oz and 64 fl oz jar options, organic travel bags and more.
If you’re just getting starting with home sprouting, you’ve landed on probably the best way to get nutrients from greens because you get a true fulfillment from growing them yourself!
Sprouting makes you a certified green thumb. An indoor gardener.
Especially when you go from sprouting to growing microgreens. The next step after that can be anything – outdoor vegetable garden (seed bank), more indoor gardening, or backyard farming, natural farming etc. it’s a good In.
But saying home sprouting promotes “healthy eating” is an understatement.
Although it’s a bit of a pseudo-term, sprouts are a superfood.
Super foods are known to be extra nutrient dense.
If there’s a superfood rating scale out there, outside of something like shilijit, I’d assume sprouts, with all their micronutrients, polyphenols, amino acids even, would be towards the top if not topping it.
And on top of that, you won’t need to spend $20 for a green juice at Whole-foods to get your desired greens-nutrients anymore.
You’ll just need a small area to set up some sprouting jars, some quality organic seeds and some good quality sprouting supplies.
You can DIY your kit.
You likely have everything you need already (it’s not much).
But for complete ease and guaranteed home sprouting success (if you’re just getting going or trying it out), a quality sprouting kit is what you should get. Even if you’re just testing the waters. The good steel component kits on average will cost you maybe a few bucks more than others.
Home sprouting kits provide you all you need for home sprouting.
But even then, there are parts you should have in your sprouting kit at home that you’ll have to find separately.
What Should Be In A Home Sprouting Kit?
Parts & Pieces Of A Sprouts Growing Kit
At the end of the day, sprouting is simple and kits should be simple.
You only need a few things.
- Mason jars or tray to sprout from.
- Cheesecloth or porous organic cloth for the lid.
- Something to prop it up on, upside down at an angle.
Something for these three things should all be in a best sprouting kit.
The jar is the only thing that is really essential.
You can fenangle a stand and lid with the porous cloth.
It wouldn’t be ideal, but maybe for your sprouting environment it would be.
You won’t find kits with ALL the things you need for sterile sprouting because it probably doesn’t make business sense to add 10 different random components, including cleaning supplies, to the kit (although that option should be on the market!).
Let us go over all the components you may use during sprouting.
A More Complete Sprouting Supplies List For Home Sprouters
- Multiple jars for doing each thing in separate sterilized jars (soak, sprout, store)
- Hand held strainer for larger seeds
- Organic cotton porous cloth (cheesecloth)
- Cleaning tools and materials (vinegar, bleach, soap, scrubbers, etc.)
- Sprouting stands and drip trays
- 316 steel sprout drainage lids
- Organic sprouting seeds
- Blackout sleeves
- Silica gel packets
- Paper towels
- Steel tray for placing mason jars on in oven when sterilizing
- Stovetop pot or saucepan for sanitizing jars and lids
- Travel sprouting bags for travel
- Food safe plastic bucket – for chicken feed sprouting!
The Best Sprouting Kit?
A “best” sprout kit is subjective as there are many specific types and the best for you will arise out of your preferences.
Maybe you don’t want plastic.
Maybe you want something that won’t break when you travel,
But at the same time you don’t want plastic.
Here’s a bunch of different types sprouting tools that can be made into sprouting kits:
- specialized sprout kits for specific seeds (like legumes)
- travel sprout kits
- traditional jar kits
- tray kits
- vertical tower kits
- fancy design home sprouters
- automatic sprouting kits
Each has their own highlight feature or benefit to consider.
From the completely hands-off auto sprouters (take away that green thumb statement if you only use these!)
..to traditional mason jar sprouting kits that require constant cleaning, sterilizing, and they won’t do the sprouting for you.
But not all come as “kits”.
That’s why a standalone list of sprouting supplies is useful.
Kit Materials
Your area’s climate and home’s microclimate will play a role on finding your best type of sprouting tool material for you.
Material that sprouting equipment is made from will ranges quite a bit:
- Glass – Mason or Ball jars are easy to clean, can view sprouts grow.
- Terra Cotta – Breathes well, controls moisture, good for sprouting.
- Metal – Food grade stainless steel will work for years on end.
- Mixed Materials (auto-sprouter machines) – These combine different materials i.e. plastic and metal.
- Plastic – leaks, holds water, loosens, breaks over time. (316 steel is best for lids)
If you’re in a humid environment, for example, you may prefer to travel with a plastic sprouter over a glass jar or cloth sprouting bag (unless you’re really good at drying things while in the tropics).
Or it may not be a non-toxic sprouting thing for you, but instead an environmental one, meaning you still don’t want a plastic sprouter.
At first you can whittle it down your best kit by isolating your preferred materials for it.
This will then lead you to finding the best TYPE of sprouting kits for you.
Below I list out some good wide mouth jar sprouting kits:

What About Tray Sprouter Kits?
Tray sprouting is another excellent method for sprouting. A good steel one will last you forever. It may be more finicky to clean ensuring rust stays away versus glass, but you don’t have to worry about it cracking on you. It’s good to have both on-hand.
Most sprouting trays don’t really comes as kits because there aren’t as many moving parts.
No metal rings or mesh lids.
Only a big steel lid and a tray.
You still get to see everything going on by simply lifting up the lid and having a top-down view of your sprouting seeds.
There’s a single one getting all the rave reviews on Amazon and it’s by the Soligit brand. Looking into its details I see it’s 304 steel. 316 would be better, but I’ve yet to find a 316 steel one yet.
The one sproutpeople sells doesn’t say steel-type, BUT it does say Made in Japan. The same Japan that makes katanas and swords from what some call the purest, steel in the world (Tama steel).
You’ll have to hand-select the other supplies you’d need to sprout with your tray to make your own DIY sprouting kit when choosing the tray.
More Sprouting Kit Types To Consider
- If you got your own jars, jar sprouting kits without the mason jars.
- Auto sprouters that come with additionals (this Kilner one looks pretty good).
- Seed specific sprouting kits – I’ve seen bean sprout and alfalfa sprout kits being advertised (they look the same as any general sprouting kit though).
- Ceramic sprouter kits – clay or ceramic is another awesome looking type of sprouter that you can find in kits.
- Travel sprouting kits made from different organic cloth materials.
- DIY sprouting kits – piecing together your own because just like anything, building a bike, a motorcycle or a computer, you can get better quality buying the best stuff individually.
Summary On 2024’s Best Sprouting Kits For Mason Jars
Mason jar sprouting kits are excellent for beginners and small space sprouting.
I hope these jar sprouting kits offer you a few options from the sea of millions, that are a little better than the rest.
Because I prefer to scrape rust off my incomplete dry job steel metal rings and mesh sprouting lids than to use a wide mouth plastic sprouting lids, this list excludes the plastic-based grow kits.
This best sprouting kits list currently has a few different size grow kits, almost zero plastic, the best quality steel on sprouting rings and mesh lids, different style stands, lids and one with a half gallon (64oz.) jar.
I’ll keep an eye out for more kit brands (and places to find them) and will have to keep adding to this list.
You can get them with or without the jars, depending on your needs.
These kits ensure your sustainable hobby is even more sustainable, by not bringing in mass-produced cheap plastic products into the mix (except for the single jar grow kit with the plastic drip tray – added for the style points with those wooden knobs…).
